Building a website in Morocco: agency, freelancer or studio?

You are starting a web project in Morocco and hesitating between a large agency, a freelancer and an independent studio. All three have their place — but not for the same kind of project, nor for the same client profile. Here is an honest comparison, built from what our clients tell us when they arrive after trying the other options.

What is an independent development studio?

An independent studio is a small team — often 2 to 5 people — covering the whole cycle: design, development, integration, deployment and maintenance. No intermediary between you and the person producing the work. No salesperson relaying your requests to a team you will never meet.

NexaCode is a studio based in Mohammedia. We work in Casablanca, Rabat and across Morocco, on site or remotely. The model: one contact, quality code, deadlines that hold.

Agency, freelancer or studio: the deciding criterion for each profile

Each profile wins on a different criterion — the question is which one matters to you.

When should you choose a large agency?

A large agency brings structure and headcount. That helps on very large projects: multi-country platforms with dozens of stakeholders, institutional tenders requiring substantial legal standing, projects with strict contractual SLAs.

In exchange: significantly higher costs (you also pay for the salespeople, the project managers, the open-space rent), longer timelines (every decision passes through several layers), and a contact who changes often — especially if your budget does not place you among the priority accounts.

What our clients most often tell us after a large agency: “we never knew where the project stood”, “we were handed over to a junior mid-way”, “we paid for features we never received”.

When should you choose a freelancer?

A freelancer means maximum flexibility and often the lowest cost to start. It is the right call for targeted work: building a specific component, fixing bugs, creating a simple landing page, implementing a supplied mockup.

The limits show up on long projects:

  • Availability: a freelancer juggling five clients can disappear for a week because another project is on fire.
  • Continuity: if the freelancer changes direction or leaves the country, the project can be orphaned half-way through.
  • Coverage: a good front-end developer is not necessarily strong in technical SEO, backend security or DevOps deployment. On a complete project you will need several profiles.

A freelancer is ideal for short, well-defined work, or as reinforcement for an internal team that already holds the overall vision.

When should you choose an independent studio like NexaCode?

The studio is the synthesis of the two: the expertise of a multi-disciplinary team with the closeness and responsiveness of a single contact.

It is the right choice for:

  • Moroccan SMEs and mid-caps who need a serious website, a B2B platform or a business application without paying for agency overhead
  • Startups that want to move fast, iterate, and have a partner who understands the constraints of a product finding traction
  • Odoo projects: an ERP rollout requires understanding the client's business as much as the software — a direct relationship is essential
  • Long-term projects where maintenance and evolution matter as much as the initial delivery

Our custom web development service covers marketing sites, e-commerce and B2B platforms. Our SaaS service is for digital product owners. For ERP projects, see our Odoo service.

Questions to ask before picking your provider

Whether you contact an agency, a freelancer or a studio, always ask these:

1. Who actually does the work? Some agencies subcontract to teams abroad. Knowing exactly who develops your site is a legitimate question.

2. Do you have live sites I can look at today? Not mockups — real sites. Check their speed (PageSpeed), their SEO (Lighthouse), their mobile behaviour.

3. What happens if I am not satisfied mid-project? A good provider has a clear answer to this. A bad one gets vague.

4. Who will be my contact if there is a bug after launch? Post-launch maintenance is the real test of a relationship. Many providers vanish once the final invoice is paid.

5. How do you handle changes during the project? Back-and-forth is part of every project. Knowing whether it is fixed-price or time-and-materials changes a great deal.

What NexaCode does differently

We publish our portfolio with named clients and live URLs. You can check for yourself the quality of what we deliver.

Our Odoo projects — ATMI Maroc, BH Drive, Gaya Pharma, Coin Outils — are documented with the modules deployed and the results obtained. No “+300% growth” without context: precise facts about what was delivered.

We never start a project without a written brief approved by both parties. That avoids expensive misunderstandings later on.

Frequently asked questions

Do you only work in Mohammedia and Casablanca? No. We work with clients across Morocco and internationally. Most of our projects run entirely remotely.

Can we start a project without a full visual identity? Yes, provided it is planned in the brief. We can handle the brand guidelines or work with an existing designer.

What is your response time for an urgent bug after launch? For clients on a maintenance contract, we commit to 4 business hours on critical incidents.

Do you offer turnkey projects including hosting and domain name? Yes. We can manage the whole stack: VPS hosting, domain name, SSL certificate, backups. Everything is itemised in the quote.

How does handover work at the end of the project? You receive every access credential (hosting, Git repository, domain, third-party tools). The code is entirely yours.
